DERIVATIVE
Fauve Art x Swann Ronne
2023

“Swann Ronne presents four hoodies inspired from his [Dust] paintings series, and made in his trademark layered technique.

Ronne's artwork is abstract and modern, and he combines gestures and language through a semiological deconstruction approach. His work is inspired by urban visual environments, using popular affect, clandestine graphic techniques, signage, vandalism, and mass icons as materials for his paintings.

‍Ronne's [Dust] series of paintings explore traces, colors, and words by cleaning, erasing, redacting, and sanding, creating a critical setting for failure of the notion of series and the subject itself. The paintings manifest a conflict within themselves, with traces, signs, and letters put in crisis, leading to involuntary or unconsidered residual matter. The metaphor of dust symbolizes an inconsiderate and accidental material with which we negotiate daily. Dust represents the truth about our activities, including particles of DNA, hair, skin, canvas fiber, sawdust, and brush hairs, constantly moving, swept up, thrown away, and coming back.

‍Ronne's [Dust] paintings inspired him to create wearable art with a motif of the DUST stencil, playing the role of a signature and evoking a brand logo or label. As a painter, he constantly stains his clothes and tries to clean them, which embodies the ambivalence behind [Dust]. Ronne's work has been exhibited in Paris, Germany, and the south of France, and he won the Roger Bataille painting prize in 2022.”
